Android Storage Full but Nothing to Delete?

Deleted everything and Android still says storage full? The space is usually sitting in a trash bin, a chat app's media folder, or the camera roll.

You deleted apps. You cleared out photos. You emptied everything that looked deletable, and Android still says storage is full.

Your phone is almost certainly fine. The space is usually real, it is just being held somewhere you have not looked: a trash bin that has not emptied yet, a chat app’s media folder, a cache, or a camera roll big enough that deleting fifty photos was never going to register.

Most articles on this hand you eight fixes in no particular order and open with “clear your cache,” which returns the least space of anything on the list and rebuilds itself within days. This one is ordered by gigabytes returned. Work down it and stop when the bar moves.

One honest thing first. A portion of your storage is never coming back. Android itself and the preinstalled apps sit on the system partition, which is why every phone shows noticeably less usable capacity than the number printed on the box. That part is not a fault and no cleanup app can touch it.

Start here: is it actually full, or is the number stale?

Answer these in order and stop at the first yes. You probably only need one section of this article.

  1. Have you emptied all three trash bins? Not one. Three. If you have only emptied Google Photos, skip to the next section.
  2. Did you delete things in the last few minutes? The storage panel can lag behind recent deletions while the system re-scans and re-totals. Restart the phone and look again before you conclude anything.
  3. Is it your Google account that’s full rather than the phone? That is a completely different problem with a different fix, and we covered it separately in Google Photos storage full but phone is not.
  4. Have you opened the category breakdown at all? Settings → Storage on most phones, or Settings → Battery and device care → Storage on Samsung (Device care rather than Battery and device care on One UI 7 and later). Read which category is actually largest instead of guessing.
  5. Are you comparing usable space against the capacity on the box? Those two numbers never match, and the gap is not recoverable.

The reboot in step 2 is the one people skip, and it is a 30 second test. A phone that is genuinely full and a phone showing a stale count look identical from the Settings screen, and they need opposite responses.

Culprit 1: three separate bins are still holding your deletions

This is the biggest, easiest win, and it is the single most common reason people arrive at this article. Deleting a photo on Android does not remove it. It moves it, and the file keeps occupying the same bytes it did yesterday while it waits.

There are three independent holding areas, each with its own retention clock and its own empty button.

Google Photos Trash. Google keeps deleted items for 60 days if they were backed up, and 30 days for items that were never backed up. Open Google Photos → Collections (Library on older versions) → Trash → Empty trash.

Samsung Gallery Trash. On Galaxy phones, deleted images and videos are held in the Trash for 30 days, and it is on by default, so your deletions are already sitting in it. Gallery → menu (the three lines) → Trash → Empty. Older One UI versions called it the Recycle bin and let you switch it off; since One UI 6 it is always on.

Files by Google Trash. Files moved to Trash are automatically deleted after 30 days, and until then they still count. Files by Google → menu → Trash. Worth knowing that the app’s “Junk files” cleanup card works differently: those files are removed permanently and never appear in Trash.

Empty all three, then restart, then read the number. If you have been deleting steadily for a week without emptying anything, this step alone can return several gigabytes.

Culprit 2: chat apps are hoarding media you never saved

The second largest hidden pile is almost always a messaging app. Nothing about a casual gallery scroll reveals it, because these files live inside the app rather than in your camera roll.

WhatsApp auto-downloads photos and videos from every chat and every group by default. Every meme, every forwarded video, every screenshot someone sent in a group of forty people, all sitting on your phone months after the conversation ended. WhatsApp’s built-in storage manager, at Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage inside the app, groups your media into “Larger than 5 MB” and “Forwarded many times” buckets and lets you sort by size, so you can strike the biggest files first. Telegram is the one nobody writes about, and on phones that have it, it is often the single largest app. Telegram is cloud-first, which makes its cache the safest thing on this entire page to delete: clearing local cached media does not lose the files, because they re-download from Telegram’s servers when you open them again. The exception is secret chats, whose media lives only on the device. Its Data and Storage settings also let you cap how long media stays cached instead of keeping everything forever.

Set both apps to stop auto-downloading video over mobile data while you are in there. That converts a recurring problem into a one-time cleanup.

Culprit 3: cache, “Other,” and the part you can’t get back

Now the category everyone starts with, placed where it belongs.

Android’s storage breakdown includes a bucket most people find infuriating. Samsung describes “Other” as data from apps you have installed, plus system files, cached data, and temporary files that do not fit any other category. Samsung also says plainly that it cannot be deleted directly from the device. There is no button. It shrinks only as a side effect of clearing individual apps’ caches or data, or removing the apps behind it.

Know the difference between the two buttons on an app’s storage screen, because Google’s own wording is precise. Clear cache “deletes temporary data. Some apps may be slow the next time you open them.” Clear storage “permanently deletes all app data”, which means logins, downloads, offline content, and settings. Cache is safe. Storage is a reset.

Set your expectations honestly: clearing cache across your apps typically returns somewhere between a few hundred megabytes and a couple of gigabytes, and Android starts rebuilding it immediately. Worth doing once, but it is rarely the thing standing between you and a working phone.

The Downloads folder

Open Files by Google → Downloads and sort by size. PDFs you read once, installers, videos saved from a browser, ZIP files from two jobs ago. Nobody opens this folder voluntarily, which is exactly why it accumulates. The Clean tab in the same app surfaces large files and duplicate downloads without you having to hunt.

If your phone is old, glance at .thumbnails

On older Android builds, the hidden DCIM/.thumbnails folder and its thumbnail database files could grow to a few gigabytes on a large library. Android 10 and later changed how apps reach shared storage, and modern phones rarely show anything significant here. Give it a single look on an ageing device, then move on, and whatever you do, do not start deleting hidden folders at random to chase it.

Archive apps rather than uninstalling them

The Play Store can archive apps you have not opened in a while. It removes most of the installed package while keeping your data and the icon on your home screen, so tapping it restores the app rather than starting you over. For the three games you play twice a year, this is free space at almost no cost.

Skip the third-party “cleaner” apps that promise to sweep your whole phone. Since scoped storage arrived in Android 10 and 11, apps cannot freely browse other apps’ files, so most of what those tools claim to do is no longer possible. Skip the factory reset too. That is a last resort for an entirely different class of problem, and it will not tell you where your gigabytes went.

Culprit 4: the camera roll you keep scrolling past

Open your storage breakdown again and look at what the Images and Videos rows actually say. On a phone that has been in use for a couple of years, this is usually the largest single category by a wide margin, and it is the one people leave for last.

Video is the multiplier. Modern phones default to high resolution and high frame rate capture, and a minute of that is several times the size of a minute of standard 1080p footage. A handful of long clips can outweigh a thousand stills.

Which brings up the arithmetic nobody wants to run. Deleting 200 average photos gets you roughly 600 MB back. So if your storage bar is 12 GB short, you are looking at several thousand photos, or a handful of very large videos, and picking off a few dozen images will not register no matter how many times you check. Google Photos offers one shortcut here: “Free up space on this device” removes local copies of items that are already backed up to your Google account, leaving the cloud copies alone. Two caveats before you tap it. Items under 30 days old may be kept on the device, and anything that was never backed up exists only on your phone, so check your backup status first.

That shortcut also does not solve the actual problem, which is that your library is still full of things you would never choose to keep. Eleven near-identical shots of the same sunset. Burst sets where one frame was worth having. Screenshots of addresses you no longer need. Receipts. Blurry pocket photos. The stuff that is genuinely deletable, if only reviewing it were not so miserable.

And it is miserable in the stock gallery, because select mode was designed for grabbing five things and sharing them, not for processing four thousand. Long-press, drag, lose your place, tap the wrong one, confirm a dialog, start again on the next batch.

That gap is why Swipe44 exists. The correct order of operations

Most people run these steps backwards, see a full bar anyway, and conclude the phone is broken. Do it once in this order and the number will move.

  1. Empty all three bins. Google Photos Trash, your gallery’s own trash, Files by Google Trash.
  2. Restart and read the number. If it dropped enough, you are finished.
  3. Clear the chat apps. WhatsApp media by size, Telegram cache, and turn off auto-download while you are there.
  4. Clear caches and the Downloads folder. Expect hundreds of megabytes, not a rescue.
  5. Archive apps you have not opened in months.
  6. Triage the camera roll at real volume. Thousands, not dozens. Use whatever makes that bearable.
  7. Empty the bin again, because your fresh deletions went straight into it.
  8. Restart, then check Settings → Storage.

Your Android is not broken and does not need resetting. It is holding gigabytes in three bins, a chat app, and a camera roll you have been scrolling past for two years. Empty the bins, clear the messaging media, then deal with the photos properly, and the bar will finally tell you the truth.
