On iPhone: Settings, General, iPhone Storage, Photos. On Android: Settings, Storage.

This is the number that decides your Amazon bill. Photos are the free half.

What you pay today

Prime is already paid for, so it is not counted against Amazon here.

iCloud+ bills monthly only, so its yearly figures are the monthly price times twelve.

Cleanup

Duplicates, burst frames, screenshots and old screen recordings usually run 20 to 40%.

Quick picks
Yearly saving vs your plan
$15.89/yr
Moving your photos to Amazon and dropping iCloud+ 200 GB.
Photos Amazon stores free at full res 60 GB
Video over the 5 GB cap 20 GB
Amazon plan you would need 100 GB
Amazon cost per year $19.99/yr
What you pay now $35.88/yr

That is $1.99/mo.

Prime as a storage product

Net saving if you bought Prime only for photo storage
-$123.11/yr

Prime costs $139.00/yr ($14.99/mo). That is more than iCloud+ 2 TB at $119.88/yr and more than Google One 2 TB at $99.99/yr, so buying Prime purely as storage does not beat any mainstream tier below iCloud+ 6 TB ($359.88/yr). The real saving belongs to people who already pay for Prime and are paying a second storage bill on top of it.

Delete instead of paying

Saved on Amazon after cleanup
$0.00/yr
Saved by cleaning up and staying put
$0.00/yr

A 20% cleanup does not change your Amazon plan. Clearing 20 GB would take the bill to zero.

What Prime's "unlimited" photo storage actually covers

Photos, and only photos. An active Prime membership stores an unlimited number of photos at full resolution, RAW files included, with no re-encoding. Video is a separate allowance and it stops at 5 GB. If you are not a Prime member, the free tier is 5 GB of photos and video combined, which a modern phone passes in a weekend.

That split is the part every "Amazon Photos is free" article skips past. Your Amazon bill is driven almost entirely by the video half of your library: 40 GB of stills costs a Prime member nothing, while 40 GB of 4K clips puts them on a paid plan. Work out your video gigabytes first (the video storage calculator converts minutes of footage into GB), because that single number decides the answer.

Amazon Photos vs iCloud+ vs Google One, priced per year

Amazon sells storage annually, Apple sells it monthly only, and Google sells it both ways. Everything below is a yearly figure so the three are actually comparable. iCloud+ is marked as billed monthly, because that yearly number is twelve payments, not one.

PlanCapacityPer year
Prime membershipUnlimited photos, 5 GB video$139.00
Amazon 100 GB100 GB$19.99
Amazon 1 TB1,000 GB$59.99
Amazon 2 TB2,000 GB$119.98
iCloud+ 50 GB50 GB$11.88 (billed monthly)
iCloud+ 200 GB200 GB$35.88 (billed monthly)
iCloud+ 2 TB2,000 GB$119.88 (billed monthly)
iCloud+ 6 TB6,000 GB$359.88 (billed monthly)
Google One 100 GB100 GB$19.99
Google One 200 GB200 GB$29.99
Google One 2 TB2,000 GB$99.99

The part the affiliate-heavy comparisons tend to bury: at $139.00 a year, buying Prime as a storage product loses to iCloud+ 2 TB ($119.88) and to Google One 2 TB ($99.99). It only pulls ahead once the alternative is a 6 TB tier. The real saving belongs to someone who already pays for Prime for the shipping and the video and is carrying a second storage bill on top of it. Cancelling that second bill is free money. The cloud storage cost comparison calculator runs the same numbers across every provider at once, and the iCloud storage cost calculator and Google Photos storage cost calculator break down each side on its own.

When a cleanup beats every plan

Three boundaries decide whether you pay anything at all: Amazon's 5 GB of video for Prime members, iCloud's free 5 GB, and Google's free 15 GB. Most people paying for storage are not hundreds of gigabytes past those lines. They are a few dozen, and most of that few dozen is duplicates, burst frames, screenshots of things settled months ago, and screen recordings nobody has opened since.

The asymmetry is the whole argument. A subscription renews every year for as long as you keep the photos. A delete happens once. Clear 18 GB of old video and a $19.99/yr plan is gone for good, not gone for a month.

How to shrink a camera roll before you pay anyone

Work by month instead of trying to face the whole roll at once. Start with the duplicate groups, since near identical shots are the easiest yes-or-no calls and usually the biggest single win. Long videos come next: sort by size and check the ones you have never rewatched. Then batch the deletions instead of confirming them one at a time, and empty Recently Deleted afterwards, because until you do the space has not actually come back.

That is the loop Swipe44 is built around. You swipe through Recents, Random, or one month at a time, right to keep and left to delete. Duplicates are grouped by perceptual hashing done on the phone itself. Everything you mark piles up and goes in one batch behind a single system confirmation, with a running tally of the space freed. No account, nothing uploaded, and iCloud-offloaded originals are never downloaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about amazon photos storage savings calculator

Is Amazon Photos really unlimited for Prime members?

For photos, yes. An active Prime membership includes unlimited full-resolution photo storage, RAW files included, with no compression. Videos are separate and capped at 5 GB.

Do videos count against Amazon Photos storage?

Yes. Prime covers unlimited photos but only 5 GB of video. Anything past 5 GB of video needs a paid plan, so a phone full of 4K clips can still land you a bill on Amazon. Our video storage calculator turns minutes of footage into gigabytes if you have no idea how much video you are sitting on.

How much does Amazon Photos storage cost without Prime?

Non-Prime customers get 5 GB combined for photos and video. Paid plans are $1.99/mo ($19.99/yr) for 100 GB, $6.99/mo ($59.99/yr) for 1 TB, and $11.99/mo ($119.98/yr) for 2 TB, scaling to 30 TB at roughly $59.99 per extra TB per year.

Is it worth buying Prime just for photo storage?

Usually not on price alone. Prime is $139/yr, which is more than iCloud+ 2 TB ($119.88/yr) and Google One 2 TB ($99.99/yr). It only wins if you already want Prime's shipping and video, or if your library is big enough to need a 6 TB tier somewhere else.

What happens to my Amazon Photos if I cancel Prime?

Your allowance drops to the 5 GB non-Prime tier. Amazon gives a 180-day grace period during which you can view, download and delete but not upload. If you are still over quota after 180 days, Amazon deletes content starting with the most recent uploads.

Does Amazon Photos compress my photos?

No. Photos are stored at their original resolution, RAW files from the major camera makers included. It is the one thing Amazon clearly does better than services that re-encode what you upload.

Can I share Amazon Photos storage with family?

Yes. Amazon Family Vault lets a Prime member share unlimited photo storage with up to five other people, so one Prime membership can cover a whole household's photo backups.

Would deleting photos be cheaper than any of these plans?

Often, yes. Most camera rolls are 20 to 40% duplicates, screenshots and near identical bursts. If a cleanup pulls you under 5 GB of video on Amazon, under iCloud's free 5 GB, or under Google's free 15 GB, the storage bill goes to zero and stays there. A subscription just renews. The cloud storage cost comparison calculator prices the same library across every provider.
